MIT First Lady 1990 – 2004

Rebecca McCue Vest is an honorary member of the MIT Alumni Association, which awarded her the Bronze Beaver—its highest recognition for service—in 2004. Her husband, Charles M. Vest, was MIT's fifteenth president and Mrs. Vest served the Institute during his term in a variety of roles through which she identified needs within the MIT community. The MIT Women’s League, whose Student Financial Request Policy Committee Mrs. Vest cochaired, established an annual fellowship in her name to support a graduate or undergraduate MIT student in a summer service project benefitting women and their families in the Cambridge/Boston area.

Highlights of this interview include:

  • College years at the University of West Virginia and the University of Michigan.
  • Her husband’s time as dean of engineering and provost at Michigan, then president of MIT.
  • Working on charities such as Daffodil Days and World Aids Day.
