Elizabeth Goldring's "Seeing Machine"

GOLDRING: The Center for Advanced Visual Studies Vision Group's recent invention was originally inspired by the scanning laser opthalmascope, or SLO. The SLO is a diagnostic medical tool, which we turned into an expressive artistic tool for people who are blind or visually challenged.

My idea was to create and promote visual experiences and a visual language, that would encourage people to keep even a highly damaged sense of sight alive. You know, I can't believe that this eye that sees nothing can look into this machine and see an image in all clarity.
