ALAN LIGHTMAN: I think art is extremely important in a science education. We are whole people. All of us-- each of us as both a scientist and an artist. I think both art and science are related in the creative experience. And to the extent that we can let our mind roam free and consider many possibilities. And can go into that sort of disembodied, selfless state, which is the true creative moment. I think to that extent good science and good art are quite similar. Art-- and the humanities in general-- give us a sense of aesthetics, a sense of beauty, a sense of wholeness. Sharpen our creative sensibilities. Give us a social consciousness that is so important two running and managing, intelligently, the technological and scientific age that we live in.
